I really like the way the developers set up category selection for a younger audience. With nine categories to choose from children make their selection from a picture menu, where a sheep represents “On the Farm” or a dolphin denotes “In the Sea”. It makes the app very user friendly and there really are 101 animals! (The OCD in me counted.) The dinosaurs selection includes pteranodon, dimetrodon, diplodocus, monoclonius, stegosaurus, velociraptor, brachiosaurus, parasaurolophus, ankylosaurus as well as T-Rex with pronunciation included following puzzle completion, a very helpful feature for non paleontologist like me. Pronunciation is a feature for each category of the app. Another feature I appreciated was color identification. Each puzzle piece is a different color that is announced when the piece is picked up. Drag and drop the pieces in place to complete the puzzle. Then tap the animal to pronounce its name, then tap is again to hear its sound.
From the parent menu you can choose the difficulty level and progression of game play. For beginners you may want to set the number of pieces to stay at 2 or 3. For an older child you may select auto-adjust. This will allow them to start out slow but move up to the maximum 8 pieces available. 101 Animal Puzzles is an app I think any child would enjoy!
